Memory as a design condition in the built environment

The Younghusband Woolstore Redevelopment reimagines a 122-year-old redbrick wool store and adjoining network of industrial early 20th-century buildings as a new mixed-use community precinct.

Using an approach that seeks to “lightly touch” the existing historic structures, Woods Bagot will retain the rich heritage character of the brick warehouses through elements including decommissioned bail elevators and wool pulleys, original Younghusband painted signage, steel-framed windows, and a distinctive sawtooth roof that was originally installed to help merchants scrutinise the quality of the wool beneath the natural light.

Come along to this panel discussion and hear from speakers who have worked across all angles of the project, from the architects to the art consultant, as they discuss what will be Melbourne’s largest net-zero carbon, adaptive-reuse precinct.

Collaborators:

Emily Wong is a landscape architect, editor and design researcher. She is the editor of Landscape Architecture Australia magazine and has taught at Deakin University, RMIT University, and the University of Melbourne. Her PhD research explores new strategies for design curation in an era of ecological collapse.

Sue Fenton is a Woods Bagot senior associate and interior designer. Sue is the interior design leader on the Younghusband redevelopment project in Kensington, and is interested in the preservation of memory and stories within the interior fabric of the building.

Bryan Cush is an architect and furniture maker. His practice Sawdust Bureau combines modern and traditional woodworking and joinery techniques to produce handmade, bespoke pieces made from native timber. Bryan is also a former tenant of the Younghusband building.

Lou Weis is the founder and creative director of Broached Commissions art consultancy. As a narrative-driven production house, Broached provides research and creative direction for public art in commercial spaces, connecting built spaces to stories of people and place.

Millie Cattlin is an architect and design director of These Are The Projects We Do Together – an experimental practice operating in the fields of architecture, design, curation, education and creative programs. Her projects Testing Grounds, Siteworks and The Quarry work with public space, creative infrastructure, and site programming to create socially-inclusive community spaces.
