A workshop and exhibition that zooms in to an unseen universe of microbes

Billions upon billions of microbes are thriving away in the background, supporting ecosystems and hooking up intricate communication networks between lifeforms. They’re so small, it can be easy to forget how important they are, even when we’re planting something new.

This workshop and exhibition, led by Danish Australian artists Rhoda Ting and Mikkel Bojesen, lets these tiny lifeforms show their true colours. The Copenhagen-based duo are back in Australia, inviting us to find and grow the microbes that live in the gardens surrounding MPavilion. We’ll get the chance to collect soil samples, make dilutions and grow microbes on agar plates. Add your discoveries to the artists’ sculptural installation and infuse the piece with collaborative life. Once they grow, the microbes will reveal worlds of biodiversity that exist all around us.

The installation will be on view in the pavilion between Saturday 15 February – Sunday 23 February.

Registrations are recommended for those attending the workshops on Sunday 16 February. Workshop suitable for ages 12 and up.

Wominjeka (Welcome). We acknowledge the people of the Eastern Kulin Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which MPavilion stands. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present – and recognise they have been creating, telling stories and caring for Country for thousands of generations.
