Our Why brings together artists from difference dance styles to explore how and why people dance. Dancers will share with audiences stories of their practice, ranging from their training and their battles to their community and mood-building jams and sessions.

This event is an outcome of the 2023 M_Curators program, which supports young and ambitious art, design and creative workers to gain practical experience in developing and curating public events and programs.

The M_Curators program is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies.

Collaborator:

Giuliano ‘Gino’ Hammal, also known as ‘24’, was born and raised in Naarm/Melbourne’s western suburbs. Gino is a multidisciplinary artist of Egyptian, Sudanese and Syrian heritage presenting primarily as a dancer, specifically a krumper. He began his dance journey in 2021 and has found a comfortable spot within Naarm/Melbourne’s krump community, ‘Burn City Krump’. On top of his dance background, Gino has studied movement-based science and visual art media, such as painting, photography, and digital design, as forms of artistic expression. Recently, he has begun to explore ways to contribute to the community via hosting dance sessions, curating events and assisting event organisers.

Wominjeka (Welcome). We acknowledge the people of the Eastern Kulin Nation as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which MPavilion stands. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present – and recognise they have been creating, telling stories and caring for Country for thousands of generations.
