MARS II lands in the pavilion pond—an installation built to bloom in the deep

Underwater adventurers and ocean-lovers alike should be able to appreciate what Reef Design Labs are doing with MARS II. It’s the latest of their Modular Artificial Reef Structures—a clever design with cascading nodules that encourage the restoration of marine life and help rebuild reefs without the use of barges or cranes. For the duration of Every Living Thing they’re setting up a striking sculptural piece using MARS II components. Once the series wraps, they’ll plunge it into Port Phillip Bay, where it’ll protect and nurture marine life.

Ahead of the installation, we sat down with Alex Goad of Reef Design Lab to explore the role of artificial reefs as targeted restoration tools, a smarter way of using concrete in the ocean, and his collaborations with leading marine science organisations to create a more sustainable future underwater.
